How we report progress

Reports that say what your child can do

Our reports tell you what your child can do, how secure it is and what comes next. There are no marks out of 100 and no class ranks.

The four-step scale

  1. Not yet
  2. Emerging
  3. Secure
  4. Exceeding

From Grade 1 to Grade 8 (Stages 2 to 9), each area of each subject is reported on this one scale, against the Cambridge objectives for your child’s stage. It is never a comparison with the rest of the class.

A child can be Secure in number and Emerging in statistics, and you see exactly where to help.

By stage

  • Early Years

A portfolio and a termly written learning story.

  • Grades 1 to 8

The four-step scale, a teacher’s note and Progression Test outcomes.

  • Grades 5 and 8

Cambridge’s own Checkpoint report, shared exactly as issued, about 8 to 9 weeks after the tests.

  • Grades 9 and 10

A working-at grade, a predicted grade and an effort rating. Mock results are added in Grade 10.

Checkpoint

A view from outside

Checkpoint is Cambridge’s external test at the end of Primary (Grade 5, Stage 6) and Lower Secondary (Grade 8, Stage 9). Ambitus families already know the Grade 5 Checkpoint; the Grade 8 Checkpoint is introduced by 2028-29. It is not a board exam, has no pass mark and gives no certificate.

  • A score from 0 to 50 in each subject and a performance band from Basic to Outstanding, set against students worldwide
  • A detailed breakdown of your child’s strengths and gaps
  • A report about 8 to 9 weeks after the tests, shared exactly as Cambridge issues it. The March series results arrive in early May
  • We never publish a school average or rank children by it

Checkpoint performance bands (lowest to highest)

  1. Unclassified
  2. Basic
  3. Aspiring
  4. Good
  5. High
  6. Outstanding

It tells us, and you, where to help. It is diagnostic, not a prize.
